Get THE BOOK on the History of Nichols Industries

Holsters were made by a tremendous variety of companies. Tex Tan made holsters in the beginning for Nichols Industries, but there were lots of others.

And then there were the private people who made holsters sets (and still do!) for the various sizes and styles of Cap Guns. To this day many private individuals restore holsters that were famous in their day and also these same artisans create new designs.

So it gets complicated. We will do our best to list some of the finer holsters and holster sets—sometimes with the guns and sometimes without. We hope that you will send in some of your favorite photos.

PLEASE HELP!
There won't be any "Art Trade Fair Shows" this year because of the COVID-19 virus, so I won't be able to sell my glass ornaments at those shows. And money is tight for the USA (Pray for our leaders and Jesus said "Pray for those who would spitefully use you."...so with money tight it's just a hope that we can receive contributions.

Believe me, even small contributions help! This is the only site where you are likely to find most of the Cap Guns ever made. The site will always be free to use, but it's not free for me.

YOU CAN CLICK BELOW TO HELP OUT!
(Contritubutions start at only $10, but you can make it more if you can afford it.)
(And we absolute refuse to put you on a mailing list or sell your e-mail address.)
Thank you "History Buffs & Collectors"—Mike Nichols, Texas

George H. Rogers Company Fancy Double Holster
This is a really fancy holster set that must have been made a really long time ago. Why? Because, except for custom folks like John Coatney, Chuck Layman and Roy Evans, people just don't make much nice stuff anymore. Oh, there are others, I just mentioned them to be nice, since they are within my website!

Thanks to Bob Stevens.

I personally think that the rider on this Tex Tan Tophand Holster Set looks like president Ronald Reagan. What do you think? Tex Tan, of course, was "allied" with Nichols Industries from nearly the beginning of the company.

Here's a really nice Keyston Brother Holster Set Box, but we're not really sure what came inside. I asked, but it's quite possible that they used it for several different models of holsters.

As I told Bob and Pat, this holster set looks like they started make it for Paladin and then added "BONANZA" to it. But it sure is nice.

This is about as nice a set of Hubley Cowboys as you're likely to see. Be sure to click on this photo to see a larger one in a different view. These are from Bob Gray.

Here's a double holster set featuring a couple of Kilgore Americans that is simply wonderful. If you didn't know, you wouldn't know. It being a Cap Gun set, of course. Looks real enough to most folks and a kid would have thought he was in Second Heaven to own a set like this. Now you can buy a fancy Italian shotgun for what this is worth. Great offering from our friend Steve Arlin.

Isn't this a wonderful double holster set from Ed Manes? Now I know why I seldom see nice holster sets in antique stores. It's because people like Ed and Steve Arlin have hoarded them all. And the funny part is that most antique dealers don't even know anything about Cap Guns and holsters. We have them all over Huntsville, and I have yet to find a store that has any decent Cap Guns! Amazing! Notice that this set has Gene's name engraved on the pocket and his picture too! This set must be worth a small fortune.

Here's a swell double holster set from Ed Manes for Annie Oakley and all of her sidekicks. Notice the comic book! Things like that aren't cheap anymore. But they are a good investment. It looks like a pair of Hubley Cowboys in the pockets.

Roy Rogers Holster Set
BE SURE TO CLICK ON THE THUMBNAILS
Here is an incredible soft glove leather holster set. The Cap Guns pictured are George Schmidt guns, but my main interest here is the holster set and its gloves. They are simply magnificent. The studs and conchos are in amazing shape. These gloves are as heavy as welder's gloves and the heavy metal gold Double R Bar logo is very nice. This is a set you just don't see every day. However, they are preserved here for everybody to enjoy. Do you have photos like these of your favorite Cap Guns or Holsters? Let me know!

Many thanks for these photos to John R. Smith

Well lookee here. Kids used to strap Cap Guns to their bicycles! Amazing that we ever survived!

Many thanks to Rich Hall for the photo.

Daisy Holster Set
w/ Pony Boys
by Hubley/Gabriel
Daisy also made holsters and "stuffed" them with guns from other manufacturers. These are Pony Boys from the 1970s.

Thanks to Dwain Burkholder

Here's a very nice double Leslie-Henry Cap Gun/Double Holster set from Canada.

Thanks to David Denton.

Huge Adjustable Holster Set
BE SURE TO CLICK ON THE THUMBNAILS
Here is a VERY nice double holster set that is adjustable with the center buckle. This one holds the larger guns and has lots of bells and whistles. You almost never see quality holsters for kids these days. I don't think a kid could possibly afford them these days!

Many thanks for these photos to Doug Hamilton!!!

Here is a Tex Tan holster outfit. Tex Tan made holsters and holster sets all of the way back to the early days of Pasadena. They were located in Yoakum, Texas and made some really fine quality stuff. The holster that you will see that was made for my dad on the home page of this website was made by Tex Tan. You will notice the "LWN" for Lewis W. Nichols that is worked into it.

Many thanks for this photo to Bob Garvey!

Holster Sets Restored by Red Nichols
These holster sets exhibit some of the finest workmanship you will see anywhere. The workmanship is by Red Nichols of Australia.

The top holster set is a very rare and hard to find Hubley 'Overland Trail' Holster Set.

The second set is a Carnell-Nichols 'Roundup' Holster Set, which has the Nichols bullet clips attached right on the gun belt and originally came with two Stallion 38s.

Photos furnished by Jim Turner via Red Nichols.

Trust Bob Garvey to have nothing but the finest Cap Guns and Holsters!
Here is a set and his description...
"2 Better Than Excellent Nichols Stallion 38 Cap Guns; a MINT, Unused, Black Russell Double Holster with 6 MINT Holster Bullets and Box plus 12 Two Piece Genuine Nichols Stallion Bullets in their Belt Clips. "

Photos furnished by Bob Garvey.

Quality Holsters w/ Stallion 38's
A quality set of holsters! Pristine felt backsides too!
Here we have a modern double holster set made by some craftsman that I don't know. I do recognize the Cap Guns, however, as they are Stallion 38's. Notice that the backs are lined with a soft red felt. The workmanship of these is just about as good as you can get. The insets on the left photo show the buckle assembly and the combination of fake and "real" Nichols bullets that came with this set that was sold online.

Thank You Bob Garvey For Your Photos!

Double Nichols Cowhand Set
BE SURE TO CLICK ON THE THUMBNAILS
This is a double Nichols Cowhand set that reminds me of the holster on the cover of this website that was made by Tex Tan for my father, Lewis W. Nichols. It seems that there is virtually no such thing these days as quality holsters being made—except by individual craftsmen. (and Cowgirls!) But in the old days, it was quite common to see something that was so...FANCY!
