The J. and E. Stevens Company of Cromwell,
Connecticut was a very old company. They were making toy guns before most of
the other companies were formed.
They made some very old cast iron models that were
pre-World War IIsome were in the 19th Century! After World War II they
started making die-cast Cap Guns just like everybody else. But they didn't have
much innovation and besides, as you already know, the "Glory Days" of the Cap
Gun Industry were getting ready to be over in the mid-sixties anyway. So the
Stevens Company went the way of the "tumblin' tumbleweeds."

Stevens 6 Shot
Cast Iron Cap Gun
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
This Stevens 6 shot Cap Gun
with an "ammunition for Stevens 6 shot revolver" cap box. This gun from 1932
has a unique revolving cylinder that allows a quick loading of single shot caps
without breaking the gun open. It was a swell idea until Kilgore came up with
the disk cap a few years later. This gun is in excellent physical and working
condition.

Here's a cast-iron Texas
Ranger that I hadn't ever heard of before. Of course those of you who write in
and ask me all sorts of esoteric questions actually know that I'm no expert in
this field anyway. But this is a nice Stevens Texas Ranger and
scabbard.

This is a rare Cap Gun that is
cast-iron. It is the first model of this gun from Stevens and the box was only
printed on one.

Here's a Stevens Pinto
from Chuck Quinn. Notice that this Cap Gun has that wonderful patriotic grip so
it must have come from around the World War II era.
This is the Stevens
45both the long-barreled and short-barreled versions from around 1910.
Very rare. Cast-iron.
Here's a group of early
cast-iron six shooters from Stevens. Weird cylinder mechanisms.

Another World War II Cap
Gun.
This gun is in pretty good shape for an antique toy that is 60+
years old. Hey, I'm feeling younger!
You will notice that this Cap Gun has a
red jewel in the grip with a cowboy on the right side and a horse's head on the
left grip.

When people are kind
enough to let you use their photos and they are of this quality, well, you just
can't say, "No." Here are two by Tom Coates of a MINT Buffalo Bill AND BOX!!!
There has been no photo-editing on the box either. Imagine a 60-year old box in
this fine shape! |

Cast-Iron Stevens Buffalo Bill

Chuck says that this is the
very last version of the Buffalo Bill cast-iron Cap Gun and notice that it
doesn't have the jewel. Maybe they were "dumbing it down" to save on
costs.

This particular version of the
Stevens Buffalo Bill lineup has a complete bust of our hero on the grips. Hey,
this one has a box. I am (lately) extremely interested in original boxes
myself, as they are a lot more rare than the Cap Guns.

You
do know that I'm a sucker for a good photo. So here's another one of The
Sheriff.
Photo thanks to Jim Manning.
Just for the fun of it, here
we have a reproduction TrueReplica Box made by Dan and Karen Dozier of
The Toy Tent of this Stevens Sheriff. They are the best reproduction box makers
in the universe and I just can't believe the detail that they put into their
work. Definitely a product of love. And the funny thing about it is that the
prices aren't even outlandish at all, when you consider that they aren't
exactly selling in the millions of copies.

Here we go again! This is one
of those Cap Guns that is "another Cap Gun" with a new name.
However, when
you try to collect all of the guns in a series by a manufacturer, you will find
that some of them are harder to find. Simple "supply and demand." You have to
have them all in order to really have a set. |
