Kilgore, of Westerville, Ohio, was DEFINITELY one of the largest sellers of toy Cap Guns in the old days. They made a lot of quality cap guns and also made a lot of the roll caps. Uncle Talley assisted them in modernizing their equipment that made the roll caps and thus made it more profitable for everybody. Their line of Cap Guns will always remain in the top of the brands that are desirable to collect.

NICHOLS GUNS
(in Uncle Talley's order)

Kilgore Laramie Jr.
The Laramie is one of the rarest of the Kilgore series and this is the Laramie Jr. in mint condition.

Thanks to Chuck Quinn for these photos!

This immaculate Kilgore G-Man is a cast-iron gun from around 1935. You won't find a better one.

Photo thanks to Andrew Teleki

I didn't know it when I posted the above cast-iron G-Man, but Kilgore later made another version of the same gun out of bakelite, which is sort of a pre-cursor of the standard polymer plastics. But, of course, the really amazing thing is that we have a box to go with it. Jack and his wife sent me a WHOLE ALBUM of photos to scan and this one makes the last of Cap Guns that I didn't already have. Thanks Jack. You're a good man and have been very kind to me.

Photo thanks to Jack Rosenthal of Toys and More.

This must have been made in the last days of Kilgore, for I just can't imagine them making it in their "Hey Days." Kilgore was known for a lot of fine Cap Guns and when companies like that made sets like this, it was usually because younger and younger kids were playing with Cap Guns. Also, the box's fancy look is more...60's to me. You will notice that the rider on the right looks like an Arab. Strange!

Photo thanks to Lise and Chaz

Kilgore Sharpshooter
This is actually a very rare cast-iron Cap Gun by Kilgore from the 1930's.

Many thanks to Ed Manes

Here is the same gun, but in black and with a sales sheet from those "Good Old Days."

Photo by Belinda Quan from the Chuck Quinn collection.

Kilgore Champion Fast Draw Gun Set
Now here's something unusual. A gun that times your fast draw! Mine would need a bigger timer.

Photos thanks to Joe Alves

Here is a box bearing Art Linkletter's picture on it and endorsing the Kilgore Champion Fast Draw Pistol with their own award. Art Linkletter was a variety show host back in the 1950's and 1960's who wrote some famous books like Kids Say The Darndest Things. Very funny stuff! Nice man too. But it does show that those times were a lot different than now.

Kilgore Fast Draw Champion Set
Here are some more photos of the Kilgore Fast Draw Champion set. These photos show the box up close.

Thanks to Jamie Linford for these photos!

Kilgore Rex Cast-Iron Automatic
Here's a Cast-Iron cap gun manufactured by the KILGORE company & I believe it was from the late 1930's to early 1940's era. It is called a "REX." This toy cap gun has the dark finish with outstanding mother of pearl grips. This is a detective-style automatic that shoots roll caps. It has a flip-up action on the side frame for loading. This piece is 3-7/8 inches long. This is a one star gun in the Charles W. Best book, considered somewhat rare.

Thanks to Doug Hamilton for these photos!

Kilgore Roy Rogers Shootin' Iron w/ Box
Here's a very nice MINT "SHOOTIN' IRON" Cap Gun by Kilgore that is still in the box. One like this is extremely valuable. It has a revolving cylinder and nice engraving. Notice Trigger on the grips.

These photos thanks to Ted Dietrich
Here's the same model of gun and box, but this one was owned by David Denton of The Antique Cowboy. And, of course, this view shows the right side of the gun.

This is a gold plated Shootin' Iron by Kilgore that has black staghorn grips. Very unusual.

Thanks to Chuck Quinn

Slighty Different Version
Here is a Kilgore Roy Rogers Shootin' Iron that is a very slightly different model.
The barrel is a little different, as is the hammer area. You can see a larger photo of this Cap Gun at the end of one of the Daisy Pages, as Daisy made a Fast Draw set.

Many thanks to Tom Coates!

This is a really nice photo of the same model and this one is just about dead mint.

Many thanks to Rich Hall

Roy Rogers Shootin' Iron w/ Bronze Frame & Nickel Barrel
Now here's a really weird variation. The frame is made of bronze, but the cylinder/barrel assembly is all die-cast. Go figure!

Photos thanks to Chuck Quinn.

Here's a full case of Kilgore's roll caps.

Photo thanks Ted Dietrich!

Kilgore was famous for making LOTS of caps for Cap Guns. Actually my
Uncle Talley was responsible for upgrading their abilities, which also helped Nichols.

Strange as it may sound, you won't ever find many photos
of the Disc Caps by Kilgore. I hadn't even seen them before!

Thanks to Susan Kenehan for this swell photo.

Here is an example of really collecting caps! Whole cases of caps at a time. I can't tell what that gun is on top, but it might be a HALCO Maverick.
Thanks to Chuck Quinn for these case photos!

More caps from Chuck. I don't recognize those "American Repeating Caps." Or, the Space Bomb Rocket Caps."

Though 2/3rds of the caps in this photo are by HALCO, I am including it because it shows a case of Kilgore caps on the right that I don't have in any other photo.
